Courier Outreach Ministries began in the back room of Your Grandmother’s Cupboard. In this area volunteers were packing emergency bags of food, diapers, soap, shampoo, aspirin, band aids and other "necessities of life" to help meet the needs of the homeless, the poor and those suffering from a temporary emergency. One of the volunteers voiced the idea of packing a Bible in with each kit. Every one thought this was a great idea, and began to explore the concept of doing so. However, it soon became apparent that the cost would be prohibitive, and for most of the homeless who had no storage facility, the Bibles were too large for the bags they used to carry all their possessions and clothing. Then, while meeting with the volunteers packing the kits, a visiting minister made a suggestion. His suggestion was to create and include an inspirational and Biblical based message, small enough and inexpensive enough to distribute, be read, and if need be, discarded. From that idea the Courier Outreach Ministries program was born. Today, the program consists of bookmark size "Couriers" with the messages printed on variously colored light cardboard stock. Where appropriate, Couriers can be printed in Spanish on one side and English on the other. These "Couriers" are distributed weekly at no charge to participating soup kitchens, food pantries, and other facilities serving the homeless and the poor, who in turn distribute Couriers to those they serve. New messages for the "Couriers" are written, printed and distributed each week so that the persons receiving them have a new Biblical message to take with them in the carry out food or clothing packages they receive after each visit to the kitchen, pantry or service center. The Couriers offer a number of options for the funding organization. For example, an individual or church organization could include an "In honor of", or "In memory of" on the bottom of the "Couriers" they funded. There could also be notices of other services the church or sponsoring organization offers to people in need. The Courier Outreach Ministries Program provides partnering church and community service agencies God’s Word and message of hope to those who currently are not reached by formal church worship services.
